Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims

You may have seen in the news that the government is going to review a significant number of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims.  The reason for doing this is because the High Court ruled that some of the parts of the existing assessment and criteria for PIP have been unfair to claimants with mental health problems.  This ruling was after a legal challenge by campaigners.  The government has decided not to challenge this ruling.  PIP claims will be reviewed to see if people missed out under the unfair assessment criteria and ,if they did, they may be awarded more for their PIP and will have backdated payments to cover any amount they have missed out on.   The DWP has said it will be contacting anyone affected and additional payments would be backdated to the effective date in each claim. Claimants do not need to write to DWP in order to receive the correct award, and will not have to undergo a new assessment.  The government hasn’t provided a timescale of when this will be completed at this point.

This is still new news so we will keep you posted on any developments.  We realise any news about benefits and changes can cause anxiety.  This change should not negatively affect anyone’s award or the amount they receive.  The review is only looking to see if people should have been awarded more for their PIP.
