Dan Palmer, a member of our Bournemouth Drop-in group, talks about his experience at Bournemouth Film and Comic Con.

Dan was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome as a child.  He spent much of his time in the social care system.  Dan has worked in the past and has trained in catering, he finds the workplace and the demand to work at such a fast pace really challenging.  Dan is a real advocate for people with autism and often goes out of his way to help people understand more about the condition as he goes about his daily life.

Dan attends Bournemouth Drop-in Group most weeks and often used the time to work on making his costume for Comic Con. The costume making was very time consuming and by his own admission, the need to 'get everything just right' did increase his anxiety levels and the focus certainly became quite overwhelming at times.

A Film & Comic Con is where people of all ages celebrated their favourite television shows, films and comics while rubbing shoulders with likeminded fans and screen stars. Dan says: "I enjoyed meeting and talking with new people.  Also I met John Rhys Davis who starred as Gimley in Lord Of The Rings.

The quantity of people at the event was challenging but I saw many people from the autistic community involved and I was made to feel very welcome.

John Rhys Davis was interested to hear about the challenges people face in employment and positive about how I have managed to adapt and life with my condition.

The Cosplay community makes everyone welcome.  Short, tall, fat, thin whatever…however you want to dress.. you are all welcome.  People were helpful, supportive, friendly and encouraging.  All in all, a great escape from the stresses of being autistic in a neurotypical world.”
