On World Autism Awareness Day, our Advocacy Services Manager, Karen, visited BAE Systems in Christchurch to deliver one of our Autism Awareness Training sessions.

We were contacted by Amanda who works at BAE and has autism herself, and she kindly wrote the following piece; allowing us to share it on our blog.

April is Autism awareness month and as an autistic adult with 2 out of 3 of my children also on the autistic spectrum, I was keen to have some kind of activity at BAE Christchurch to recognise this and spread awareness.  The consensus was that most wanted some kind of workshop so on 2nd April "World Autism Awareness Day", I arranged one in the Christchurch demo room.  Karen Wilmshurst of Autism Wessex came along to tell employees about autism and give them an insight into how it can be for an autistic person in the workplace. I also did a presentation on my personal journey with autism, how it impacts my life and my work and what I have found helpful or not so helpful through my autism journey at work.

There was a fantastic turn out, many questions asked and a lot of people saying how they felt they had more of an understanding of autism and how to better accommodate and provide reasonable adjustments to their autistic work colleagues. The feedback I have had from this has been amazing and I really appreciate the time that people took to come along, to ask questions and to talk to Karen and I afterwards. I have been overwhelmed at the positive response from this activity and am now going to do the same at Yeovil with Karen and will also be presenting to our Senior Leadership Team next month.  It has been great to see how responsive and open people have been to wanting to understand more about autism. I hope this will make a positive difference to many autistic people within the business and would like to thank everyone that came along and made it such a great experience.

Our training sessions are available to any organisation who want their staff to gain a better understanding of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
