International Opera Singer Celebrates Autism Ambassador Appointment

Internationally renowned opera singer Sophia Grech is celebrating her new role as an Ambassador for Autism Wessex by performing at our Carol Service this December.

Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome two years ago at the age of 45, Sophia is bringing her passion and experience to advocate for autism. She will give a special performance at our popular, annual Carol Service on Tuesday 5th December at the Christchurch Priory.

Emily Pike, Corporate Relations & PR Executive at Autism Wessex said; “We are so excited to welcome Sophia as an Ambassador. Her profile, not only regionally and nationally but on the international stage, will be immensely valuable in helping to raise awareness of autism. From performing in front of Royalty and Presidents, we are delighted that Sophia will be joining us for an evening of Christmas cheer!”

One of our most popular events, the Carol Service will start at 7pm and will also feature performances by the Funky Little Choir Company and students from our specialist school, Portfield School. The Mayor of Christchurch will be attending and giving a reading. The event is free to attend with donations welcomed.  Kindly sponsored by Williams Thompson Solicitors LLP and Abbey Life, all donations raised will be match funded by Basepoint Business Centre in Bournemouth.

Sophia Grech said; “I am so thrilled and honoured to have been asked to be an Ambassador. My own late diagnosis was life changing and in my experience it is so often a lack of understanding and empathy from other people that can be so devastating for someone with autism and their family. Working with Autism Wessex I am determined to do everything I can to bring about change and improve autism awareness and understanding moving forward.”

We celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2018. Our services are available to anyone who needs them; people with autism and associated difficulties, families and professionals. Anyone affected by autism can rely on usfor support.

Suzanne Kadziola, Practice Manager of Williams Thompson Solicitors LLP, an event sponsor, said; “We are delighted to be supporting this fantastic community event for another year. Located close to our offices, the Christchurch Priory is a beautiful venue for a festive evening of carols and it is great to have Sophia joining us this year too.”
