Drop in Groups Enjoy Big Brekkie Celebrations

3 April 2018

Our Drop in Groups for adults with autism in Bournemouth and Dorchester held special breakfast events last week in support of our Big Brekkie campaign. Those that came along also shared their thoughts and experiences of having autism and being supported by our services, to celebrate our 50th Birthday.

The weekly Drop in Groups, which offer people the opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills and meet others with autism, enjoyed a tasty breakfast as part of our Big Brekkie campaign to celebrate World Autism Awareness this April.

Big Brekkie is our annual campaign to raise awareness of autism and vital funds for our Information and Advice service by encouraging supporters to host a fundraising breakfast at anytime in April. This year’s campaign is backed by celebrity chefs Lesley Waters and Mat Follas and is sponsored by Williams Thompson Solicitors LLP.

Over drinks and cakes, people also shared 50 thoughts on what the Drop in Groups and our Information and Advice service mean to them, in a nod to our 50th Birthday year.

“Helps improve our social skills”, “Given us more confidence in the workplace” and “Helps me understand more about my Autism Spectrum Disorder” were just 3 thoughts that were shared by 3 members of the Dorchester group.

Kim Whitfield, our Information and Advice Service Adviser who organises the Drop in Group in Dorchester said; “It was great to see so many people enjoying our Big Brekkie and it was genuinely moving to hear everyone’s thoughts on what the group and the charity means to them. Our Drop in Groups and Information and Advice service are a lifeline to many local people yet we rely entirely on voluntary donations to run them.”

Kim continued; “If you feel inspired to do a Big Brekkie too, it’s not too late! Simply choose a date in April, register online at www.bigbrekkie.org.uk and download your free fundraising materials. The money you raise will help hundreds of local adults, families and professionals to access free advice and support.”
